Project on fabrication of Ferro-cement Bench

As an engineering student, I feel that project works and the seminars are very important part of our curriculum as this is the opportunity where we have to work manually and practically, gaining the practical knowledge and ideas relating those theories that we have learned in the classes, so that we are confident and ready to face the world of engineering.

So, for our final semester project we got the topic ‘Fabrication of the Ferro-cement Bench’. Actually, it was supposed to be portable Ferro-cement bench but I don’t think that Ferro-cement benches could be made portable ever, so the topic was changed to fabrication.

For our project, I have designed two benches, one is the ferro-cement bench which will be constructed using the thin layer of Portland or the normal cement mortar with thin reinforcement bars. And the other is wood and concrete bench which will be constructed using both the wood as well as the reinforced concrete. We are using reinforced concrete for the higher strength and durability, and wood for the better aesthetic view.

This are the two designs of benches that I have designed for our project and the seminar by going through some of the sample benches which were designed before.

We are five in the group, namely Mr. Nima Dorji, Tshering Penjor, Miss Jigme Wangmo, Dechen Yangzom and myself headed by our project guide Mr. Tandin Wangchuk.

We were asked to construct six numbers of such benches for the seminar and if it goes well, some of them may be send to the Sherubtshe College of Education as they were the one to order the benches and some of them will be kept here in our college park. Actually they had ordered us the portables benches but our project guide recommended us to go for the ferro-cement benches so, we are constructing it.

I have a much expectations from doing this project, expectations of gaining lots of field knowledge, ideas and to face the engineering problems with a confident ultimately. I’m hoping and praying that the materials would reach on time and there wouldn’t be any obstructions and delays during the construction process.

As I was forcefully appointed as the group leaderJ, I really require their best co-operation and will to do the works from my colleagues and I’m really hoping that they will not fail to give.

Though I’m quite worried too, but I’m hoping that everything will go well as per our plan and hoping for the best.
